Today, Medlab GmbH, a developer and manufacturer of innovative medical monitoring technologies, introduced the newest member of it's family of medical OEM modules, the PEARL 100 pulse oximeter. PEARL stands for "Pulse Enhancement Artefact Rejection Logic".
The PEARL uses most advanced digital signal processing technologies to work reliably even under the most challenging conditions: low perfused patients and high patient movement. The board consumes only 100mW of power and can therefore be used in battery- and mains powered solutions.
The PEARL allows every engineering staff skilled in electronics to develop a pulse oximeter by simply adding a display, a power supply and a visualization part for the device. The final oximeter that uses the PEARL module will rival even the most advanced units available today on the market in regard of reliability, low perfusion performance and movement rejection.
Pulse Oximetry has become, together with ECG and Blood Pressure, the most important vital parameter to monitor. It works non-invasively by measuring the changes in light absorption in a patient's finger or ear lobe due to arterial blood pulsation. Pulse Oximeters can display the patient's pulse rate and the percentage of hemoglobine currently coupled to oxygen. For example, a saturation value of 96% means that 96% of the hemoglobine molecules in the arterial blood are coupled to an O2 molekule. Since the measurement depends on detection of the pulsation of blood, low perfusion in patients and a high degree of movement artefacts have been traditional plagues for pulse oximeters.
